Codex Contexts
Keep Codex accounts and API providers in separate local profiles, select one per project, and open a clearly labeled VS Code window.
Codex Contexts is a command-line helper for people who use more than one Codex account or API provider. It keeps each identity in its own local CODEX_HOME directory and lets you choose which one to use for a terminal session or project.
What you can do
- Create separate homes for ChatGPT sign-ins, Responses-compatible API providers, direct Azure configurations, or the optional U-M GPT gateway setup.
- Run Codex under a selected identity from the terminal.
- Use
direnvto select an identity for a project and open a labeled, isolated VS Code window. - On macOS, optionally add a Finder action for opening a project with its chosen identity.
The helper runs on macOS and Linux with Bash 3.2 or newer. The installation guide lists prerequisites and setup steps. Start with the README to choose an identity type, then follow the matching provider guide.
Use with research data
Separate profiles help you select the intended account or provider. They are not a credential vault, security sandbox, or approval for sending sensitive data to a model. Check institutional and provider rules before using participant-level, clinical, controlled-access, or unpublished research data.
